BEING HUMAN RELIGIOUSLY: A HISTORY OF LIBERAL RELIGION

Third Annual Distinguished Speaker Series
Davidson Loehr, Ph.D.

Course Description

Since the word “liberal” only entered our conversations about 200 years ago, most scholars date the origin of “liberal religion” to the great Christian theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher, and his 1799 book On Religion: Speeches to its Cultured Despisers. While this is a great book, the style of religion we call “liberal” today really began about 2500 years ago, all over the world. Liberal religion always teaches that religion is about insights into living more wisely and well here and now. As such, it is always opposed to “literal” religion, which teaches another worldly kind of supernaturalism. During what scholars call “The Axial Age” of 2200-2800 years ago, the world’s thinking turned on its axis and religions everywhere turned from appeasing external supernatural deities to looking inward, affirming the sanctity of this life, and offering wisdom for living it more wisely and well.

This 8-9 hour program will be a kind of sweeping overview of the birth of the liberal style of being human religiously in Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Ancient Greece, and Christianity, culminating with Schleiermacher’s book and religious thought since him. No advance reading is required, though an annotated bibliography will be provided for those who believe, as I do, in salvation by bibliography.
